Names of God in the Old Testament
1. GOD - El, Elah, or ELOHIM
- Genesis 1:1 - ELOHIM is the first word used in scripture used to designate "God"; also used to refer to a deity or deities in general.
2. Lord - Adon, or Adonai
- Used in the O.T. in reference both to Deity and to man (i.e. Lord vs lord).
- It can be translated as master, owner, or ruler.
- The first occurrence is in Gen 15:2.
3. Yahweh (YHWH): “I am who I am” (The LORD)
the personal NAME of God in His relationship as REDEEMER.

- Jehovah is the name for the Lord God occurring most frequently in the Old Testament (5,321 times). Jehovah is the covenant name of God expressing personal relationship and when His name is compounded with other terms, together they identify and make specific those relationships such as:
- Yahweh Shalom: The LORD our Peace.
- Yahweh Rohi: The LORD our Shepherd.
- Yahweh Nissi: The LORD our Banner.
- Yahweh Rophe: The LORD our Healer.
- Yahweh Yireh: The LORD our Provider.
- Yahweh Sabaoth: The LORD of Hosts.

4. Qanna (Jealous)
Qanna (kan-naw') is translated as "jealous," "zealous," or "envy."
- The fundamental meaning relates to a marriage relationship. God is depicted as Israel's husband; He is a jealous God, wanting all our praise for Himself and no one else.[1]
- Qanna is first used in Exd 20:5.

Elohim (The Compound Names of EL/Elohim)
EL Shaddai - Almighty God (The All-Sufficient)
- Ge. 17:1; Ex. 6:3; Ps 68:14
- God as the all powerful source of blessing and comfort, (revealed especially to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob).
EL Gibbor - Mighty God
EL Olam - Everlasting God
- Isaiah 26:4; 40:28; Gen. 21:33
- "Everlasting" or "Eternal God" (denoting the eternality and infinitude of God).
EL Elyon - Most High, or Most High God
- Deuteronomy 32:8; Genesis 14:18-20; Psalm 9:2
- Denotes God's sovereignty and strength.
El Roi - The God Who Sees
- Genesis 16:13
- The "God who sees" (pictures God's personal care and immanence)
JEHOVAH Elohim - LORD God

JEHOVAH SABAOTH/TSEBAOTH - The LORD of HOSTS/ARMIES
also Yahweh Sabaoth or Adonai Tzva’ot:
- Yahweh Sabaoth is one of the most widely used names for God in the Old Testament, occurring nearly 300 times. The name Sabaoth comes from the Hebrew word for “that which goes forth” and for “armies” or “hosts.” The name Yahweh Sabaoth declares God’s reign over heaven and earth and over all armies, earthly and spiritual.[4]
