Background

A prayer attributed to the twentieth-century theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, intended to aid in one's holistic well-being. Although the prayer has appeared with various wordings, a well known version is included below. The prayer has been popular among Christians, in recovery networks such as twelve-step programs, and also for spiritual formation. The prayer petitions God for serenity, courage, and wisdom in helping people make responsible decisions for their holistic well-being. Spiritually, the prayer has aided people with regard to their spiritual formation and Christian living.[1]

The Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
