Preparatory Prayer (original)

“The Preparatory Prayer is to ask God our Lord for the grace that all my intentions, actions, and operations may be ordered purely to the service and praise of the Divine Majesty” (Spiritual Exercises 46).[1]

Jesuit Prayer for Spiritual Freedom

O Spirit of God, We ask you to help orient all our actions by your inspirations, carry them on by your gracious assistance, that every power and work of ours may always begin from you and through you be happily ended. Amen.[2]

Preparatory Prayer (contemporary alternatives)

A Holy Imagination

Invite the Holy Spirit to illumine your thoughts, imagination, memory everything you are:

Jesus I thank you that you are in the father, and the father is in you, and you are in me. Grant to me a holy imagination, a holy intellect, a holy emotional self, a holy sensory self, a holy spiritual self.[3]

The Collect for Purity

"Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen."[4]
